Burt Dow, Deep Water-man (1963) was the last book written by children's author and illustrator Robert McCloskey. Burt Dow is a retired fisherman living with his sister and his pet, the Giggling Gull, on the Maine coast. In the story, loosely based on the encounter of the whale in the Book of Jonah, Burt and the Giggling Gull, are fishing in Burt's only working boat, the Tidely-Idley, when a storm blows up. Burt shelters from the storm in the belly of a whale he has recently befriended, along with the Tidely-Idley and the Giggling Gull. Once the storm is over, he is faced with the problem of how to extricate himself from the whale. Burt, ever resourceful, splashes left over boat paint and sediment sludge on the walls of the whale's stomach, provoking cetacean indigestion and a rapid expulsion from the whale. The book is illustrated in vivid water color. The inside of the whale's belly is a brilliant, strawberry pink. In addition, the scene with the paint splashes is reminiscent of paintings by Jackson Pollock. Many of the characters in this book are based on real people who lived in the community of Deer Isle, Maine, where McCloskey wrote many of his books. The real Bert Dow is buried in a Deer Isle cemetery. His tombstone, which McCloskey helped to fund, reads "Bert Dow, Deep Water Man, 1882-1964".

About the Author

Roger Gastman started writing graffiti as a teenager in Bethesda, Maryland, and was able to parlay his love for it into a legitimate career. He is the founder and creative director of R. Rock Enterprises, a multiplatform media agency specializing in print, art, design, marketing, and brand development that has nurtured the careers of internationally recognized artists. Gastman has produced several independent documentary films and has held speaking engagements at universities and museums across the country. He lives in Los Angeles, California, with his two yellow Labs, Nicky and Harley. Caleb Neelon has been writing about urban history and contemporary culture for more than fifteen years. He is the coauthor of Street World and Graffiti Brasil, author of his artist monograph, Caleb Neelon's Book of Awesome, and a contributor to dozens of other books and magazines. He has painted walls in more than two dozen countries and exhibited in galleries, museums, hospitals, and educational settings. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

An incredibly well-researched city-by-city, decade-by-decade guide to graffiti and street art in the U.S. Even if you skim over the exhaustive listings of artists from each scene, you will find a ton of useful detail on the history and culture of graffiti. As an artist and educator I've found this material to be invaluable. Note: co-author Caleb Neelon is an internationally famous street artist in his own right, and lends first-hand experience and credibility to the text.

This book could have been at least 3 or 4 times longer than it actually is but then it would weigh about 15 pounds instead of about 3-4 lbs. I love the thick pages and the colorful pictures and i also loved how detailed the history was. THERE SHOULD BE A CLASS WITH THIS AS THE TEXTBOOK IN EVERY COLLEGE IN THE NATION!!~EVOL

I purchased this book to use in a class that I am teaching called The Art and History of Graffiti. The introduction and opening chapters are very informative and there are lots of images to keep my high school students engaged.

About the Author
English novelist and playwright Wilkie Collins was a prolific writer with a body of work comprising thirty novels, over sixty short stories, more than a dozen plays, and a wide range of non-fiction pieces. Collins is best known for his novels The Woman in White, an early sensation novela genre combining shocking gothic horror with everyday domestic settingsand The Moonstone, which is credited as one of the first modern mystery novels. In the 1850s Collins met Charles Dickens and the two struck up a friendship, which lead to Collins becoming a frequent contributor to Dickens s journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Many of his stories have been adapted for film, including Basil, A Terribly Strange Bed, The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Collins died in 1889 at the age of 65.
